dvdrip is one of the most popular applications in this category. it allows you to directly burn the content of your computer to a dvd disc, adding extra features such as encryption. the program allows you to directly burn the content of your computer to a dvd disc, adding extra features such as encryption. dvdrip is a program for burning dvd/bluray discs, in this case a "burning engine" is used.

now, to burn a bluray disc you have to access hardware, in particular the bluray writer. not that it's impossible but java is, in my humble opinion, not the right tool for this. you can go out of your way by implementing a library in c or c++ and using jni/jna to access that but looking at that, what do you really gain
it's not even like you are going to do anything with the bluray disc once it's been written because, from what i can tell, the bluray disc format is pretty crappy. you can burn it on cds but it's a lossy format (lossy being a good thing in most cases) and there is no drm so you can't legally copy it, which is another issue. also, there's no support for re-writable discs, so no dual layer discs. and there is no optical writing. it's a dvd format.
i would go with a different path, like going for a plugin system for java. i was thinking about adding video editing in a java plugin to neurotron and it has the potential of being a pretty useful plugin if it worked. (this is a dead project, though) but it would be cool to add dvd/bluray support to it.
it's not that hard to write a java dvd/bluray player and implement the burning functionality. it's just that you have to access the disc writers hardware. i'm still not sure if this can be done in java. i'm not even sure if bluray can be accessed in java, except for through jni.
